The Business of becoming an Artist

In the Advanced Research and Development series I am working on a methodology for, and document the process of, becoming an artist.

Step 1 – move into a new workplace, creating an environment where you can perform and produce at best.

To work, create and perform you need a workplace. Ideally a place where you can get into a mental state to focus and produce, shielded from the outside and a place where you can store all instruments and stock up materials.

The fundament that starts all.

In practice it is often a constant battle against shortage of space, clutter, money issues, fear of termination of lease and many other distractions that keep you from creating and producing.

To fight this battle I am researching and developing a workplace code. Work ethics and organisation procedures and put it into practice in the new place.

Inspired by how larger cutting-edge organisations operate (The Toyota Way, Skunkworks/Lockeed, the US Navy), artist Tom Sachs and how artists and craftsmen in general organise their workflow and daily operations.

Recurring themes are; workplace organisation and inventarisation, specifications (“Show me the specs, and I define its purpose”), efficiency and consistency and treating the workspace like a temple (“It will set you free”).
